Kitchen Island Makeover

I've been searching for the right piece of furniture to use as a kitchen island for a while now.  I finally found what I wanted!!!
                                                                   I found this piece
While the rustic finish is not my style at all, I loved the size, details, how solid it felt, and the extra storage it is going to give me.  The finish seemed like it was just oiled, and virtually unfinished.  PERFECT!!
I brought it home, and went to work.  My husband was a little fearful of the idea that I was about to paint a brand new piece of furniture.  No Pressure!
I started by painting the bottom of the island, and everything but the seats of the bar stools.  I used some latex paint that I already had purchased from Lowes.  Saving money!! Yes, I painted it right in the kitchen.  Thank goodness the weather is perfect to open the windows.
Then, I used Valspar glaze to age it out.
After I was finished with the bottom, I stained the top and the seats of the bar stools with Minwax.  I just wasn't thrilled with the high gloss appearance it left.
So, I gently rubbed it down with steel wool.  I was really nervous that I was about to ruin the entire thing!!  I'm a total novice at finishing furniture.
It worked!!!  It gave me the exact finish I was looking for.
I also love how the bottom finish turned out!  Just what I wanted.
It gives me a place to display some of my favorite things
Love these measuring cups, and I can always find them
These Candle holders are my favorite, and look just right on top of the island
I can also display this adorable bottle of wine I found at World Market

It's going to work great for my family, and I got what I had been searching for, but just couldn't find.  It just took a little elbow grease to get there.

Thanks for stopping by!

  2. You did a fabulous job on this island! The color is beautiful, and I love the way you aged it with wax. Love also that you kept the top of the island and the chair seats wooden. Saw your link at Amaze Me Monday, thanks for sharing.

    1. Thank You So Much Susan! It was from a locally owned furniture store that has budget friendly furniture. The turquoise color is on an accent wall in my kitchen, and that is what got that color started in my entire home. Thanks a bunch for your sweet comment!
